Philippians 2:3-7 – Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind let each of you regard one another as more important than himself; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.
In our world today it seems everyone has the I am number one attitude. We are all interested in what is best for us, what makes us happy, how to make ourselves more comfortable and satisfied in life. It seems we will do anything to get ahead in life and to get all the comforts and ‘things’ to make it easier for us.
The above verses from Philippians state that as followers of Christ we should be doing just the opposite. Our thoughts and attitudes should be how we can show the love of God to others, what we can do to help those in need, how can we use the money and things God has blessed us with to help the less fortunate.
God says that the fulfillment of the law is to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength and mind and to love others as yourself. While the jobs and things we have been given and blessed with by God are not wrong, we need to keep in mind that they are not the important part of our lives. We are to be thinking of others and their need for love, acceptance and help. We are to consider how we can encourage and build up someone and how can we help meet a need in their life.
There is nothing wrong with taking thought of our wants, needs and interests but the verse states ‘do not merely look out for your own interests’. Unfortunately, many times our own interests are all that concern us. May we daily ask God to help us think of others and be ready to care for them in any way possible with God’s leading.
Thank you rawgod for taking the time to read my article and to post your comment. I certainly appreciate it. I certainly understand your request. The articles posted on this blog (apart from the guest blog page) are all my writing. I certainly do not believe in saying to you or anyone who thinks or believes differently that I will be praying for their soul. I also do not post articles from other authors on my guest blog site that would do such a thing either. If there is something there that I missed I apologize for it. I truly believe whether atheist, christian, LGBT, white, black, male, female, if we look past the labels we will see individual people just like ourselves. Each of us has our own way of thinking and belief, but we cannot expect everyone to see things the same way. And just because we think differently does not mean one group is right and the other wrong. That is one point I try to make in most of my articles, we are all deserving of being treated fairly, respectfully and without judgment or condemnation…no matter what label is put on us. I will certainly pass your request on to the appropriate places. It does seem most of the time we christian people want to demonize atheists and make the gay community the worst sinners out there. Even when some christians accept those who see things differently we still make a point of saying we accept you but, or we make sure to point out we think you are wrong. I am not sure why we cannot all just accept the fact that each of us are different and will not see things the same way. We should be free from judgment and condemnation and follow what we feel is correct and still accept those who see things differently. Thanks again for your comment.

I am a Spiritual Atheist, and I applaud your choice to include people such as myself and others different from you in your circle of friends. We do have one favour to ask of you, and if you were to pass this on to the places you got your blog posts from, we would be very appreciative: Please do not treat us as runaway children who have lost their way, and especially do not say to us that you will pray for our souls! I am a pacifist, I won’t even kill any insects if I can help it, but I wanted to beat a few Christians (of different religions) because despite my asking nicely, and other people different from them asking nicely, they told us every time we met that they would pray for our souls. That would be equivalent to my saying to them, “I hope the devil steals your children.” They would have been aghast at having me slam their beliefs, yet they thought nothing of slamming our beliefs, whatever they were. I have no problem being friends with anyone, as long as there is a mutual trust and respect.
Please pass this request on to the places whose articles you shared on your blog.
Thank you,
rawgod
